This or That Book Tag

If there is something I love more than life is book tags! But not quite as much as actual books…

Introducing the “This or That” book tag! It was created by Ayunda, though I stole it from LairOfBooks. Thank you for letting me know about it!

Let me copy & paste the rules:

  • Mention the creator of the tag [ ✓ ]
  • Thank the blogger who tagged you! [ ✓ ]
  • Choose one of the options, you don’t have to tell the reasons why you chose that but you can also do them if you want to [ ✓ ]
  • Tag 10 other people to do this tag to spread the love! [ ✓ ]

Let the questions begin!

Reading on the couch or in the bed?

Depending on the couch! The one at my house right now is not extremely comfortable, so I have gotten into the habit of reading in bed. However, if I can get a comfy one, then I do prefer couches!

Male main character or Female main character?

I asked myself this question some time ago, then realised that the main characters in most of my novels are always women. Then we can take a look at some of my favourite books: Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games… I guess the answer is clear!

Sweet Snacks Or Salty Snacks?

Both! I used to be more into salty snacks, but now that I can’t eat peanuts I have acquired a healthy (?) balance between sweet and salty.

Trilogies Or Quartets?

Depends on how good the saga is! Some of favourite sagas have 7 (Harry Potter), 41 (Discworld), and even 190 books (Dragonlance) books! However, as an author, I do favour trilogies. Imagine how much time and effort it must take to write a quartet!

First Person POV Or Third Person POV?

Third person, and here’s why: I prefer novels based on world-building, where there is much to discover and many characters to meet. Usually, the first person POV reduces the possibilities; the biggest example of this is The Kingkiller Chronicle. I would really love to get out of Kvothe’s head and get to know the world and its inhabitants better, but alas, we are trapped within this one man.

Reading At Night Or In The Morning?

At night, no doubt. Slowly falling asleep while holding a  gripping book is one of the biggest pleasures I know. Plus, I have found that it’s harder to go to sleep if I don’t read!

Libraries Or Bookstores?

Well, I’m a bookseller, so… I also am lucky enough to work at one of the best bookshops in the world, so that definitely creates some bias. Though, to be fair, while I was in university I was a librarian, and I loved my faculty’s library, so… I guess there has been a little bit of evolution there!

Books That Make You Laugh Or Books That Make You Cry?

I prefer laughing! Which is one of the reasons I like the Discworld series so much. They have some really sharp and witty comedy, like this dialogue in Pyramids:

– Excuse me, I’m not being myself.

– Ah, a welcome change!

I also find it hilarious when Harry and Ron sit down to write their predictions for Trelawney’s classes and they casually come up with the most gruesome stuff one could imagine, as if they were just discussing the weather!

Black Book Covers Or White Book Covers?

I’m a big fan of white, so I’d go for that one. Now, if it was a choice of white or colourful covers… Well, you only need to check my Instagram photos to discover what I would go for!

Character Driven Or Plot Driven Stories?

I’ve been a huge lover of character-driven plots since Lost, a TV show that relies entirely on its amazing characters and their back stories. However, I don’t like it when stories revolve too much around the characters and forget completely about or trivialise the plot. Once again, I feel this is the case with The Kingkiller Chronicle: everything is so much about Kvothe and what a great guy he is, you end up forgetting what the story is trying to tell. Who is the king who’s supposed to get killed!? And why is it called a chronicle, if it’s all a first-person account!? There’s too many questions and not enough answers!!

Well, that was fun! Now to tag some people. Umh…

  1. Nadia L. King
  2. Cheeky Booky
  3. The Vintage Bookworm
  4. By Hook or by Nook
  5. Emma the Booklover
  6. Mystery Date with a Book
  7. Chloe Douglas
  8. Emily J.
  9. Shelley Wilson
  10. Michelle

Hope you like it as much as I did!

  1. I hear ya when it comes to first person vs. third person. You are kind of limited when the narration is told from the MC’s perspective. I love books that make me laugh, but I also kind of like it when I’m moved emotionally. Ideally, you want a book that can make you both cry and laugh, hopefully in that order. Great answers!
