The Book of Dust

Oh boy, I can’t believe I have been away for almost a month. Shameless behaviour! But life has a way of imposing itself on you… Hopefully I will now go back to updating more frequently, so look forward to that!

And what better way of coming back to my good old blog than to talk about Philip Pullman’s new title? I’m pretty sure all of you are excited about it—I sure am! So let’s take a look at what this Oxonian writer has in stock for us…

The Book of Dust, due to be published on the 19th of October of 2017, will be neither a sequel or a prequel, but an ‘equel’, a story that will take place alongside the events of the His Dark Materials trilogy. It will be a new trilogy which will feature some very topical themes: the fight against despotism, the struggle for freedom of speech, and the search for truth in a sea of lies.

Elements from the original titles, such as Alethiometers, daemons and the Magisterium will all come back. Lyra will once again be the main character, along with a boy that apparently appeared in His Dark Materials—any idea who that might be?

That is pretty much all we know so far! More information, such as the first book’s title, plot, and official artwork will all be coming in the following months, though I’m sure many of us have already started speculating about what Philip Pullman might have in stock for us.

How do you feel about having a sequel to His Dark Materials such a long time after the release of the original trilogy? What are your theories? I can’t wait to see what Mr Pullman has in store for us! 🙂

  1. This is an intriguing possibility given it is meant to be occuring alongside the events we’re already aware of. Apparently I have a re-read of the original trilogy in my near future. Thanks for sharing.
